Thinking of Getting a Beard Transplant? You’re Not Alone!

A recent report by Allied Market Research (AMR) revealed that the global beard transplant industry generated $189.00 million in 2021. The report estimated that this figure would rise to a staggering $1.2 billion by 2031, an impressive Compound Annual Growth rate (CAGR) of 21.1%. These figures confirm a trend identified by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS). Their survey of the market over the past decade showed that facial hair restoration treatment comprised 1.5% of all hair restoration surgeries carried out in 2010, rising to 4% in 2022.

All in all, it looks like there’s a whole lot of beard transplanting going on! What is it that’s driving this market? Who is it that’s getting the transplants and why? Read on to get some answers!

What’s Driving the Market?

One of the big factors behind the increased demand for beard transplants has been an improvement in results; great outcomes are the best marketing strategy, after all. These outcomes have been made possible by technological innovation in the field. Just as with regular hair transplants, the arrival of Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) surgery for beard transplants has been a game-changer. It has taken over from Follicular Unit Transfer (FUT) surgery as the major technique used and is rapidly becoming the default surgery for facial hair restoration. Both types of surgery deliver thick, natural beards as standard, but FUE provides for a quicker recovery, no linear scar and no side effects.

The AMR report highlights other technological developments that will play a greater role in beard transplants in the next ten years. These include the increased use of robotics technologies that will deliver even better results by reducing the scope for human error.

Beards are Fashionable!

Enough of the statistics and science. What’s really driving the market is the fact that beards are fashionable! And it’s not just the fact that more men are sporting a beard but the way the beard is worn. Walk down any high street in any town and you’ll spot goatees, hipsters, long bushy beards and everything in between. The message is that beards are fun!

That may be true, but men wouldn’t wear a beard for that reason alone. Most do so because they think they look better with one. There is evidence to support this. A study published in 2020 by Royal Society Publishing found that women viewed men with beards ‘as looking older, more masculine, socially dominant and aggressive than clean-shaven faces.’

For their part, some men find that growing a beard gets them out from under the tyranny of the daily shave. That’s not to say that neglecting your beard is a good idea. The study also found that dirty or neglected beards are a turn-off for most women.

Reasons to Get a Transplant

While most men can grow a beard naturally, there are times when some sort of beard restoration treatment becomes necessary. Alopecia barbae is the medical term that describes beard hair loss. It has several causes including alopecia areata, trauma and burns. The extent of your hair loss is one factor that determines whether or not a beard transplant is the appropriate treatment; if the loss is only partial, it can sometimes be treated with medications such as corticosteroids and minoxidil.

The other factor that determines your suitability is the amount of hair you have on your head, which provides the donor site for any beard transplant. Hair is normally taken from the back of the head as this is where the thickest hair is found. It is also the hair that is closest in texture to beard hair. If you have a healthy head of hair, there shouldn’t be a problem. If you have male pattern baldness that is at an advanced stage, things might be more difficult; this will become clearer at the consultation stage.

The process is quite straightforward. The surgeon grafts hair follicles from the head to the face. Just like a regular hair transplant, it takes several months for the full result to be visible. Beard transplants are a well-established procedure these days, so there are few risks or side effects.

Conclusion

Not so many years ago, the idea of a beard transplant would have seemed bizarre. Not any longer. Technological advances have made the process safe and successful just at a time when beards have never been so fashionable. Small wonder the market for this type of hair restoration is going through the roof!
