The Rise and Rise of the Mesotherapy Market

If you’re a regular reader of these blogs, you’ll probably be familiar with mesotherapy treatment. It’s been around for a long time in the beauty and aesthetics business where it has been used in facial rejuvenation, weight loss and the reduction of cellulite. More recently, it has been used with great success to treat hair loss and promote the regrowth of thick, healthy strands. Given that, you’ll not be surprised to learn that the market for mesotherapy treatment is booming. You might be surprised, however, by the size of the boom – read on to learn more!

Mesotherapy: A Quick Guide

For those who aren’t clued up on mesotherapy, let’s start with a quick guide to what it is and what it does. Very simply, mesotherapy is a specially formulated medication that is injected directly into the mesodermal layer of the hair loss area. The fact that the solution goes directly into the hair follicles makes this a more effective treatment than oral or topical medications.

The mesotherapy formulation improves blood flow in the scalp. It also supports the hair follicles by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. These are needed if your skin is to retain its natural elasticity. Researchers from the University of Bradford in the UK published a paper in 2020 showing that skin ageing is linked to hair follicle ageing, so maintaining the elasticity of your scalp is important to prevent further hair loss.

Treatment usually takes several sessions spanning a period of a few months. The syringe used for the procedure carries an ultra-fine microneedle. Additionally, a local anaesthetic can be applied to the scalp beforehand so there is minimal discomfort. Mesotherapy can be used as a standalone treatment or in conjunction with other medications and procedures.

Recent Research

Market research company Coherent Market Insights (CMI) published a report on the mesotherapy market in September 2021. It started by analysing the impact on the market of the COVID-19 pandemic. It found that the lockdown had disrupted production and supply lines of all health care products including mesotherapy. Despite this, the global mesotherapy market was still estimated to be worth some US$ 560.4 million in 2021. The company estimated that by 2028, this would rise to over US$ 968.4 million, a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 8.1%. That’s an impressive increase given the drag from the pandemic and the current unfavourable economic conditions. So, what’s driving growth?

Growth Factors

It is important to acknowledge that not all the growth in the mesotherapy market is down to its use in the hair restoration field. The CMI report shows that it is chiefly aesthetic procedures driving growth at this stage. Hair loss treatments are included in their figures, but anti-ageing, facial rejuvenation, weight loss and scar treatment procedures form the bulk of the growth. CMI identified growth drivers as being increasing demand for cosmetic and aesthetic procedures, increasing product launches and regulatory approvals and increasing research and development by large market players.

Mesotherapy in hair loss is also on the rise, however. Figures released by The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) showed that the estimated number of patients worldwide having non-surgical hair restoration treatments including mesotherapy rose from 1,401,589 in 2019 to 1,592,588 in 2022. That’s a commendable 13.6% increase during a period when most of the world was in lockdown.

Mainstream Service

What is behind the growing demand for aesthetic and hair restoration treatments? Some have suggested that the ageing demographic in North America and Europe is one factor. That may be accurate, but it is by no means the whole story, particularly when it comes to hair restoration.

Firstly, it ignores the growing numbers of younger people who are choosing to have hair restoration treatment; over 47% of respondents to an ISHRS survey of people attending hair clinics for treatment were under the age of 49. The motivation for that age group, surely, is the realisation that hair restoration treatments achieve better results than ever before.

An additional factor is that the stigma that used to surround hair restoration has been removed, helped by the growing list of actors and athletes having hair transplants and talking about it openly. This has helped to mainstream these services. We will soon be at the stage, if we aren’t there already, when hair restoration treatment is viewed in the same light as dental work.
