How to Choose a Hair Transplant Clinic in the UK
A neutral, doctor-reviewed framework — 12 questions to ask, the answers you should expect, and the red flags that mean you should keep looking. This guide is built to be useful even if you don’t end up choosing Vinci.
Why you need a framework
Hair restoration is one of the few elective surgeries where the marketing budget often exceeds the clinical budget. Hairline mockups, Instagram before-and-afters, and discount packages are not regulated. The clinical setup behind them is.
The 12 questions below come from working with patients who have arrived at our clinic for repair cases after going elsewhere. We’ve documented what they wish they had asked.
The 12 questions every UK patient should ask
Is the procedure performed by a doctor or a technician?
UK regulation requires a registered doctor to perform a hair transplant. In some overseas and a handful of UK clinics, the bulk of the work is done by technicians, with a doctor only signing off.
Is the clinic CQC-registered?
Every facility performing surgical procedures in England must be registered with the Care Quality Commission. Confirm registration and read the most recent inspection report.
What is the surgeon’s experience with your specific case?
A surgeon excellent with hairline restoration may not be the best fit for a Norwood 6 crown, and vice versa. Female-pattern, Afro/textured, and repair cases each demand specific expertise.
How is pricing structured?
Per-graft pricing creates a financial incentive to harvest more grafts. Size-based or session-based pricing separates the clinical decision from the commercial decision.
What is included in the price?
Consultation, anaesthetic, aftercare kit, post-op follow-ups, and revisions should all be included. Many clinics unbundle these to make the headline price look smaller.
What is the aftercare protocol?
Real aftercare means in-person follow-up appointments at 7 days, 3 months and 12 months. WhatsApp support is not aftercare.
Where can I see real results portfolios?
You should see results photos taken in the clinic, under consistent lighting, with the same patient at multiple time points (3 months, 6 months, 12 months). Single-angle “after” shots are marketing.
What does the guarantee actually cover?
A meaningful guarantee covers graft survival and density at 12 months, with a clear protocol if expectations are not met. Read the small print.
How does the clinic handle complications?
Infection, folliculitis, shock loss in unexpected zones, and unanticipated scarring all happen occasionally. A reputable clinic will discuss these openly and tell you what their complication rate is.
Is non-surgical considered first?
Many patients don’t need surgery. A clinic that recommends surgery to every consultation is selling, not consulting. PRP, MSP, and medical therapy should be discussed first.
What does the consent process look like?
A proper consent process is unhurried, written, and includes a cooling-off period. If you’re pressured into signing on the day, that is a serious red flag.
What happens if you change your mind?
Deposits should be partially refundable until a defined cut-off. If a clinic demands non-refundable full payment weeks before surgery, ask why.
Red flags — walk away if you see these
- “Limited-time” or “today only” discount pressure during a consultation
- No named surgeon — only a “team” or “specialist”
- Per-graft pricing with no upper bound disclosed
- No CQC registration number or refusal to share it
- Before-and-after photos with inconsistent lighting, angle, or timeline labels
- Guarantee language that depends on you returning to a specific country for repair
- Aftercare offered as “support” via WhatsApp only, no in-person follow-up
- Consultation handled by a coordinator/salesperson without a doctor present
- Same-day surgery offered (no cooling-off period)
- “100% guaranteed” results — no surgeon honestly promises this

“This guide isn’t an attempt to sell Vinci. It’s an attempt to give patients the right shopping list. If another UK clinic answers these twelve questions clearly and matches what we offer, that’s a clinic worth considering. If they can’t, that tells you something important.”

FAQs
Is a UK clinic always better than overseas?
Not always — but the variables that matter (surgeon oversight, aftercare access, regulatory accountability) are easier to verify domestically. See our Turkey vs UK comparison guide for the detailed view.
Should I get multiple consultations?
Yes. Most reputable surgeons expect patients to consult elsewhere before deciding. If a clinic discourages second opinions, that’s a flag in itself.
How much should a UK consultation cost?
A free initial enquiry call is reasonable. A full surgical consultation involving diagnostic work and donor mapping should cost something (£100 is typical), with the fee deducted from the surgery cost if you proceed.
How long should I wait between consultation and surgery?
At least 7 days. We recommend 14. Anything faster compresses the decision.
Does the British Association of Hair Restoration Surgery accredit clinics?
BAHRS membership is a positive signal but not a regulatory requirement. CQC registration is the legal baseline.
