Could Thyme Oil Be The Next Natural Treatment For Hair Loss?

Hair loss occurs for several reasons. Researchers make discoveries every year as the search for a permanent cure for hair loss continues. Clinical studies on essential oils have thrown up some of the most impressive results to date. They provide some evidence that essential oils can stop the process of hair loss.

Some degree of hair thinning and hair loss is to be expected as they are simply part of the ageing process. No current treatment is 100% effective, but a few medical solutions offer hair loss sufferers at least some chance of stopping or reversing hair loss. Now, thyme essential oil is showing signs that it can prevent hair loss.

Other essential oils have been shown to work in the battle against alopecia areata by promoting hair regrowth. Alopecia areata is a type of hair loss characterised by what the British Skin Foundation describes as the sudden appearance of round, coin-sized bald patches on the scalp. These bald patches sometimes affect other areas of the body too, including the eyebrows, eyelashes, beard and general body hair.

Thyme Essential Oil And Hair Loss

Thyme essential oil has been the subject of various studies, particularly with regard to its effectiveness as a remedy against hair loss. It is believed that the oil promotes hair regrowth by stimulating the hair follicles and the scalp. Other essential oils, like cedarwood, are known to have a similar effect, but thyme would appear to be the best at treating alopecia areata.

How To Use Thyme Oil For Alopecia Areata

Caution is needed when thyme oil is being used, just as it is when any essential oil is in contact with the skin. Make sure you are using carrier oils when applying thyme essential oil to the areas of your scalp affected by alopecia areata.

Using a dropper, add two drops of thyme essential oil to two tablespoons of carrier oil before applying to the balding areas. Examples of carrier oils you can use include the following:

  • Jojoba oil
  • Rosehip seed oil
  • Almond oil
  • Argan oil
  • Evening primrose oil
  • Olive oil

Once you apply the oil to the bald areas, leave it for about ten minutes so it can soak into your skin. Next, wash the oil off your skin. There is evidence to suggest that with regular application, the oil will stimulate the scalp and prevent further hair loss.

You can also massage a blend of essential oils, including thyme essential oil, into your scalp daily. Using other oils in a blend may enhance the benefits of thyme oil. The other oils you can use in combination include rosemary oil, lavender and cedarwood extract.

Why Is Thyme A Potential Treatment For Alopecia Areata?

Thyme essential oil is a nutrient-dense oil containing flavonoids and antioxidants. Bioflavonoids enhance the action of vitamin C and boost blood circulation, all essential for hair follicle health. Thyme oil also possesses anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

According to a New York board-certified dermatologist, it’s the flavonoid content of thyme oil that has been of interest in recent studies. The oil can promote hair regrowth and plays a crucial role in healthier scalp and hair follicles. Regular massage with thyme oil reduces inflammation on the scalp, promotes blood flow and contributes to overall scalp health.

Alternative Treatments For Hair Loss

Aromatherapy may be an effective and safe treatment for people suffering from alopecia areata, with trials showing some positive results. However, like all treatments, it will not work for everyone. Other hair loss treatments which are proven to work and are readily available include:

  • Finasteride and minoxidil are the main treatment options for male pattern baldness, a genetic form of hair loss.
  • Women can also use minoxidil, but finasteride is not recommended for use by women.
  • Hair transplant surgery, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and micro scalp pigmentation (MSP) are other treatment options you may try if you’re suffering from hair loss.

Again, these treatments will not work for every individual suffering from male pattern baldness or other hair loss types.
