Hair loss on Mounjaro, Wegovy and other weight loss injections

Noticing more hair in the shower since starting a weight loss jab? Why it happens, how long it usually lasts, how to tell it from pattern hair loss, and what a hair clinic can do while it settles.

The short answer

Hair shedding during weight loss on Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Wegovy or Ozempic (semaglutide) is usually telogen effluvium: a temporary, all over shedding triggered by rapid weight loss and eating less, especially less protein. It typically shows up a few months after weight loss gets going, and in most people it settles and the hair grows back once weight and diet stabilise. If you are worried, do not stop or change your injection on your own. Speak to your prescriber, and if the shedding is heavy, patchy or not settling, book a free consultation so a specialist can check what is going on.

Shedding on a weight loss injection is most often a reaction to fast weight loss and lower calorie and protein intake, the same pattern seen after crash dieting3. The NHS lists weight loss among the causes of temporary hair loss4.

It is not usually permanent. The follicles normally stay alive and start a new growth cycle.

It is not, as far as current evidence shows, the medicine attacking the hair follicles directly. Research is still developing, so this may be refined over time.

Hair loss is listed as a side effect in the UK product information for both medicines. In the weight management trials summarised there, hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking Mounjaro compared with 1.0% taking a placebo1, and by 2.5% of people taking Wegovy 2.4 mg compared with 1.0% taking a placebo2. Dermatologists list marked weight loss and extreme dieting among the known triggers of telogen effluvium3, which is why shedding is generally linked to the amount and speed of weight loss rather than the drug itself.

Why it happens

Rapid weight loss is a shock to the body

Hair growth is not essential for survival, so when the body is losing weight quickly it diverts resources elsewhere. Weight loss injections reduce appetite strongly, which is how they work, and that can mean a sudden drop in calories within weeks.

Lower protein and nutrients

Hair is built from protein, and follicles are among the fastest dividing cells in the body. Eating much less often means less protein, iron, zinc and other nutrients the follicles rely on. Smaller portions and nausea can make it harder still to eat well.

The hair cycle explains the delay

Each hair grows for years, then rests for a few months before it falls out and a new hair starts. A shock can push many growing hairs into the resting phase at once. They fall out together around two to three months later, which is why the shedding seems to come out of nowhere long after the injections began. Our telogen effluvium guide explains the cycle in more detail.

Is: a temporary shift in the hair cycle, usually diffuse across the whole scalp, linked to how quickly weight comes off and how well you are eating.

Isn’t: scarring, and isn’t usually a sign the hair will not return. It also isn’t a reason on its own to stop treatment that your prescriber has recommended.

When shedding starts, peaks and settles

These are general ranges for telogen effluvium after any trigger, including rapid weight loss. Everyone is different, and ongoing weight loss can keep the trigger going for longer.

Stage Typical timing What you may notice
Trigger Weeks to months after starting the injection, as weight loss speeds up Nothing yet. The hair cycle shift is invisible at first
Shedding starts Usually around two to four months after the trigger More hair in the shower, brush and on the pillow
Peak Often within the first few months of shedding Thinner ponytail, wider parting, hair feels less full all over
Settling Commonly within about six months, once weight and diet stabilise Shedding slows back to normal levels
Visible regrowth Over the following months, with fuller recovery often taking a year or more Short new hairs along the hairline and parting

Hair grows slowly, so even when shedding has stopped it takes time before the difference is visible, especially in longer hair. The British Association of Dermatologists notes that it may take many months for hair to return to its normal volume and thickness3.

Shedding or pattern hair loss?

Weight loss shedding can unmask pattern hair loss that was already starting, and the two can happen together. The difference matters, because pattern loss does not recover on its own.

Weight loss shedding (telogen effluvium) Pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia)
Where All over the scalp Men: hairline, temples and crown. Women: widening parting and top of the head
How it starts Suddenly, with noticeable shedding Gradually, over years, often with little shedding
Hairline Usually unchanged Recedes in men, often keeps its front line in women
Scale used Not staged on a scale Norwood scale in men, Ludwig scale in women
Outlook Usually recovers once the trigger settles Tends to progress without treatment

If your thinning follows a pattern, see our Norwood scale guide, the Ludwig scale guide for women and our page on androgenetic alopecia.

What helps

Eat for your hair while you lose weight

Protein at every meal is the single most useful change. Lean meat, fish, eggs, dairy, beans and lentils all help. If your appetite is very low, small protein rich meals and snacks can be easier than large plates. Your prescriber or a dietitian can advise on a target that suits you.

Check your bloods

Shedding can sometimes be linked to low iron or other deficiencies, especially when you are eating much less than usual. A blood test through your GP or at a clinic can check:

  • Iron and ferritin (your iron stores)
  • Vitamin D
  • Thyroid function
  • Vitamin B12
  • Zinc

Supplements help most when they correct a real deficiency. Taking high doses without a test is not a shortcut to regrowth.

Be gentle with your hair

Avoid tight styles, heavy heat and harsh chemical treatments while the hair is shedding. Shedding hairs were already on their way out, so washing and brushing normally will not make the loss worse.

Treatments that may support regrowth

Where shedding is heavy or slow to settle, clinic treatments can support the follicles while the body recovers. They are not a guarantee, and the right option depends on your assessment.

Treatment What it does Where it may fit
PRP Uses growth factors from your own blood, delivered to the scalp Prolonged shedding, or shedding on top of early pattern loss
Mesotherapy Delivers vitamins, growth factors and selected medications to the hair root, chosen for each case Supporting the scalp while diet and nutrient levels recover
Laser cap Low level light therapy used at home to support the growth phase Ongoing support during and after weight loss
Vitruvian supplements Hair focused nutritional support Alongside a balanced diet, ideally after bloods are checked

Medicines such as minoxidil may also be considered. Any medication is prescribed only after a consultation with a doctor, if suitable.

Should you stop the injection? That is a decision for you and your prescriber, not a hair clinic. Do not stop or change the dose on your own. Tell your prescriber about the shedding so they can review your weight loss speed and nutrition.

When to book a consultation

Most weight loss shedding settles on its own. Book a free consultation, and tell your GP, if you notice any of these:

  • Bald patches or clearly defined areas of loss
  • Scalp symptoms such as itching, burning, redness, scaling or pain
  • Heavy shedding beyond about six months, or shedding that is getting worse
  • A recession pattern: a receding hairline, thinning crown or widening parting
  • Other symptoms such as tiredness, feeling cold or brittle nails, which can point to low iron or thyroid problems

At a Vinci consultation, a specialist looks at your scalp under magnification, asks about your medication, diet and timeline, and explains whether this looks like shedding, pattern loss or both. See what happens at a Vinci hair loss consultation.

Quick self check

Six questions to help you decide what to do next. This is not a diagnosis, and nothing you select is stored or sent.

1. Did the shedding start two months or more after you began the injection?

2. Is the thinning spread across your whole scalp rather than one area?

3. Is your hairline receding, your crown thinning or your parting widening?

4. Do you have any bald patches, or itching, redness, scaling or pain on the scalp?

5. Has heavy shedding gone on for more than about six months?

6. Were you already noticing thinning before you started the injection?

This sounds like temporary shedding

Your answers fit the usual pattern of shedding after rapid weight loss. Focus on protein, ask your GP about a blood test, tell your prescriber, and keep an eye on it. If it is still heavy after about six months, or a pattern appears, book a free consultation.

We recommend a free consultation

One or more of your answers suggests something beyond simple shedding, such as pattern loss, patchy loss or a scalp condition. A specialist can check your scalp and explain your options. Book a free consultation.

Is a hair transplant an option?

Not while you are actively shedding. Hair lost to telogen effluvium usually grows back, so operating on it would mean paying for surgery on hair that was likely to recover anyway. Active shedding also makes it hard to judge how much permanent loss there is and how strong the donor area is.

The right time to consider it is once your weight has stabilised and your hair has had time to recover, which for many people means waiting a year or more. At that point, if a consultation shows underlying pattern loss on the Norwood or Ludwig scale, a transplant may be worth discussing. Consultations are free, and we will tell you honestly if surgery is not the answer.

Frequently asked questions

Does Mounjaro cause hair loss?

Hair loss is listed as a possible side effect of Mounjaro. In the weight management trials in its UK product information, it was reported by 4.9% of people on Mounjaro compared with 1.0% on a placebo. It is usually telogen effluvium, a temporary shedding linked to rapid weight loss and eating less, rather than the medicine damaging the hair follicles directly.

Will my hair grow back after Mounjaro or Wegovy hair loss?

In most cases, yes. Shedding from rapid weight loss usually settles within about six months once weight and diet stabilise, and the hair regrows over the following months. If it does not, or a pattern appears, book a consultation to check for pattern hair loss.

Is hair loss worse on Wegovy or Mounjaro?

Both can be linked to shedding, and the main driver appears to be how much and how quickly weight is lost rather than the specific brand. Your prescriber can explain the side effect information for the medicine you are taking.

Should I stop my weight loss injection if my hair is falling out?

Do not stop or change your injection on your own. Speak to your prescriber, who can review your dose, your rate of weight loss and your nutrition. Shedding is usually temporary, and a hair clinic can support regrowth alongside your treatment.

What supplements help with hair loss on Mounjaro?

Supplements help most when they correct a deficiency, so a blood test for iron and ferritin, vitamin D, thyroid function, B12 and zinc is a good first step. Enough protein in your diet matters more than any single supplement.

When can I have a hair transplant after weight loss?

Not during active shedding. Wait until your weight has stabilised and your hair has had time to recover, often a year or more. A consultation can then show whether there is underlying pattern loss that a transplant could treat.

Do women lose more hair on weight loss injections?

Women often notice shedding more, partly because longer hair makes it more visible. The cause is the same in men and women. Women with a widening parting should also be checked for female pattern hair loss, which the Ludwig scale describes.

How do I stop hair loss on Mounjaro?

You cannot always prevent it, but eating enough protein, correcting any deficiencies found on a blood test and treating your hair gently can help. If shedding is heavy or lasts beyond about six months, clinic treatments such as PRP may support regrowth after an assessment.
