Norwood Stage 2: What It Means, and What It Takes to Treat

At stage 2 the honest answer is normally medication and monitoring, not a transplant.

Stage 2

What it looks like. A mature hairline. The temples have moved back slightly from the adolescent position, but there is no real loss behind the hairline and no crown involvement.

Our view: Usually too early for surgery.

What Norwood stage 2 actually means

A mature hairline. The temples have moved back slightly from the adolescent position, but there is no real loss behind the hairline and no crown involvement.

At stage 2 the honest answer is normally medication and monitoring, not a transplant. Operating on a hairline that is still moving means chasing the loss for the next twenty years. We would rather stabilise you first and revisit in 12 months.

Vinci’s position: we would rather tell you a transplant is premature than take a deposit for one. Every consultation includes a trichoscopy and a donor assessment, and if the answer is “not yet”, that is what you will hear.

How many grafts stage 2 typically needs

Graft counts are a planning range, not a quote. They do not map neatly onto a Norwood stage. The number you need depends heavily on your hair and on what can be achieved for you, so two people at the same stage can need quite different numbers. Donor density, hair calibre and how much native hair remains in the area are all measured at consultation.
Area Typical graft range Indicative cost
Hairline and temples 800 to 1,040 Small FUE, from £3,500
Full stage 2 restoration 800 to 1,200 Small FUE, from £3,500

What to do next

If you think you are around stage 2, the useful next step is a diagnostic consultation rather than a quote. You can also see how we price each procedure size, or read the full Norwood scale guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move back down the Norwood scale?

Not naturally. The scale only moves in one direction. Medication can slow or stall progression, and a transplant redistributes hair you already have, but neither reverses the underlying pattern.

How fast will I progress from stage 2?

There is no fixed timeline. Progression is driven by genetics and age of onset, and earlier onset generally means faster progression. A trichoscopy shows miniaturisation before it is visible, which is the best early indicator we have.

Do I need to be on medication before surgery?

Not mandatory, but strongly advised at stages 3 to 5. A transplant does not protect the native hair around the grafts; without medication that hair can continue to thin and leave the result looking patchy.
