Let’s face it; hair loss is a menace. About 40% of hair loss sufferers are women. This may be due to alopecia, hormonal changes relating to pregnancy, or even stress. But do not be discouraged! There are a lot of effective treatments out there you can get from your dermatologist. In the meantime, here are four styling tips and tricks for better hair.
Here are four great tips from superstar hairstylist Mia Santiago of Sharon Dorram Color at Sally Hershberger in New York City. If there’s anyone who’s got the expertise to help mask the signs of hair loss, then Mia is your girl.
Bye Bye Balding Crown
If you are experiencing hair loss from the crown of your head, then you are probably dealing with traction alopecia. The usual cause of traction alopecia is a gradual pulling at the roots. The hair will usually start parting around the area that’s feeling the most stress. Santiago sees this, especially in clients who wear extensions.
As Santiago advises some of her celebrity clients, the updo hairstyle is the perfect hairstyle to camouflage any balding spots. Other options you can go for include a side braid, low ponytail or a top knot, be careful not to get your hair too tight. When it comes to concealing thinning hair, always go for the easiest style that will not only look great on you but cover up too.
Goodbye Widening Part
Santiago advises that bangs can bring a dramatic change to your appearance! But if you still see the scalp, she then recommends using a colour root cover-up product. Root cover-up products are remarkable for their strong camouflaging abilities. The products come in powder or spray form making application easy allows for more accurate placing. A different type of product uses artificial keratin fibres which you can sprinkle around the parting you want to cover up. The product comes with a special holding spray which ensures the fibres stay in place for as long as necessary, adding the appearance of volume and thickness to your hair.
You do not have to worry if neither comes in your colour. There is a more creative option. Santiago recalls the story of a client of hers with wild red hair. The said client had issues finding a colour match. Thinking a bit outside the box, she purchased a reddish eye shadow and used that instead. There are always a lot of options to delve into when others don’t work. Likely, you just haven’t found it yet.
Thicken Thinning Hair
Thinning is rather a common problem Santiago had dealt with her clients. Thinning is usually caused by hormonal reasons. But there are a lot of ways to battle it and is not to be afraid of. Using the right products is the best solution. A favourite of many hairstylists to create volume and the appearance of thicker hair is using a volumising shampoo and conditioner combo. Together, the products give out lift, body, and the appearance of greater thickness to your hair. She mentioned how it could fill out a ponytail. Now if you want to add strategic volume, dry shampoo can do a great job. There are a lot of options on the market. However, when choosing a dry shampoo, make sure it doesn’t leave out white residue on dark hair.
Severe Loss to Serene Look
Extensions are NOT the answer. Clip-in or glue-on extensions may only damage the hair further. As said before, it is better to leave the hair as is. So keep out from overusing it. A hair fall to wrap around your hair is a much better option. Think of it as a veil you wear underneath a layer of your hair. It is then brushed over the strings that hug the scalp. Hair falls are an innovative styling product perfect for concealing thinning coverage without putting stress on your hair. They are made to be gentle as they only go around your head halo-like. The roots of the hair are secured. It doesn’t pull the scalp and can be styled along with your actual hair. To put the cherry on top, they also blend in quite naturally.
