Six Common Hair Loss Conditions

It is normal to lose up to 100 strands of hair each day. Consistently shedding more than that is a sign that you are experiencing hair loss. In this blog, we count-down six of the most common conditions that could be making you go bald.

Androgenetic Alopecia

Androgenetic alopecia occurs in people who have a genetic sensitivity to the androgen hormone testosterone. It is most frequently seen in older men and women but can start to develop at an earlier age. In men, this condition causes shedding from the front and crown of the head, while women experience generalised shedding which extends from the top of the scalp.

Telogen Effluvium

Telogen effluvium is a type of hair loss which is usually triggered by physical or emotional stress. It can affect both sexes and at any age. The condition causes heavy, generalised shedding resulting in a reduction in volume and density.

Traction Alopecia

The term traction alopecia is used to describe hair loss caused by pulling. It is often related to styling techniques, such as using heavy hair extensions and tightly fastened braids, resulting in areas of baldness or weak growth.

Postpartum Alopecia

Postpartum alopecia is the term used to describe hair loss experienced after having a baby. It is related to changing levels of hormones and is a type of telogen effluvium. The hair loss is spread out across the head, resulting in a loss of thickness and volume.

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition which causes round patches of hair loss and can affect both men and women. What triggers this condition is not fully understood, however, it is believed that genetics and stress can both play a role.

Alopecia Universalis

Alopecia universalis is an advanced form of alopecia areata. Instead of experiencing patchy hair loss on the scalp, people with this condition lose all of their scalp and body hair.
