Vinci and The Mountain: Game of Thrones Actor’s Hair Transplant at Vinci Hair Clinic

Icelandic actor Hafthor Bjornsson is best known for his role as Gregor Clegane or ‘The Mountain’ in the popular TV series ‘Game of Thrones’, but he has many other credits to his name. He starred in ‘Kickboxer: Retaliation’ alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme, Mike Tyson and Christopher Lambert. He was also the first person to win the World's Strongest Man, Europe's Strongest Man and the Arnold Strongman Classic in the same year. In 2018, Hafthor also found the time to get a hair transplant to restore his lost hair.

Discussing why he chose to have hair restoration treatment, Hafthor said, “It’s something I’d been thinking about for a while. I started noticing my hairline receding at about twenty, and it kept getting worse from there.” Someone recommended Vinci’s Harley Street clinic to him. Hafthor did some research and was happy with what he saw. “I chose to have a Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedure with Vinci, and I’m really glad I did.”

FUE hair transplant surgery is becoming increasingly popular for men experiencing hair loss. The advantage it has over more traditional methods is that it doesn't leave a linear scar at the back of the head. Footballer Wayne Rooney underwent a similar procedure a few years back, and many other celebrities have followed his lead. Since then, the demand for hair transplants has skyrocketed. In 2021, some 703,183 surgical hair restoration procedures were performed worldwide according to statistics from the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery.

Vinci Hair Clinic's CEO Salvar Bjornsson explained that the stigma that used to be attached to men getting hair transplant surgery is much reduced today. “Ten years ago people had very limited information and were often misinformed about hair transplants. People often didn't realise that the transplanted hair is your own, it grows naturally and is permanent. There was a mystery around the procedure and that made people reluctant to get it done. Today, getting hair restoration work done is comparable to having your teeth fixed.”

Standing at 206cm and weighing 190 kg, Hafthor presented some difficulties for the Vinci medical team. The Harley Street clinic's standard surgery chair was not strong enough to hold him, so they brought in a chair that allowed him to sit safely and comfortably during the eight-hour procedure. A second issue was that his large frame made it hard to place the grafts. This was resolved by bringing in steps to allow the medical team to reach his hairline. It was also important to adapt to Hafthor's dietary requirements; he eats 250g of meat and 300g of potatoes every two hours to maintain his strength.

Mr Bjornsson says that it was a pleasure for the Vinci team to work on the world's strongest man. “Vinci staff are used to taking care of our client's unique needs. We ensure that clients feel safe and comfortable at every step of the process. We understand that getting a hair transplant is a big moment in their life, something they have been waiting to get done for years or even decades. We treat everyone like a VIP, whether they are famous or not.”

After the surgery, Hafthor said “I am really happy with the results. My new hairline is fantastic. The team at Vinci Hair Clinic have been amazing throughout. They took good care of me during the procedure, and it was a lot easier than I ever imagined.” With a laugh, he concluded, “Maybe I’ll become a model once I get my hair back!”
