What’s the Story with Low-Level Laser Caps?

Many of us are forever keeping an eye out for the next big thing in hair restoration. You know, that one treatment that’s going to help us grow thicker, healthier hair and so transform our lives. No harm in that at all, we say. The only danger is that, by keeping our focus firmly on what’s coming over the horizon, we risk missing some fantastic treatments that have been sitting right in front of us for years.

Like, for example, the one we’re going to look at in this article. Know much about Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)? Keep scrolling – you’re about to learn a bit more!

What is LLLT?

LLLT, also known as photobiomodulation or red light therapy, is used to stimulate hair regrowth and slow down hair shedding. It has a long and interesting history dating back to the 1960s. The initial studies on LLLT were conducted by Endre Mester, a Hungarian physician, who discovered that low-level lasers could stimulate the growth of hair in mice.

In the 1970s and 1980s, researchers began to explore the potential therapeutic uses of LLLT. Studies conducted during this time found that LLLT could accelerate wound healing, reduce pain and inflammation, and improve nerve function. The therapy works as a hair restoration treatment by extending the natural growth cycle of the hair and reducing shedding. It also improves blood circulation in the scalp, thus ensuring that vital oxygen and nutrient supplies reach the hair follicles more effectively.

The technology of the process has continued to evolve since the 1960s. These days, LLLT comes in the form of a regular baseball cap or a dome, but one packed with laser diodes that emit red light. You simply pop it on your head, turn on the device, and let the laser do the rest!

Does it Work?

The benefits of LLLT for hair growth are backed by clinical and academic studies. A study conducted in 2013 by researchers from, amongst others, Harvard Medical School, showed that LLLT significantly improved hair density and thickness. It concluded that ‘LLLT for hair growth in both men and women appears to be both safe and effective.’ The study flagged up areas needing more research to determine ‘optimum wavelength, coherence and dosimetric parameters.’

Another study published in 2014 by the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology found that LLLT was effective in promoting hair growth in men and women with androgenetic alopecia, also known as pattern baldness.

More recently, a literature review from 2020 examined the efficacy of LLLT in the treatment of pattern baldness and concluded that it appeared ‘to be effective for treating pattern hair loss in both men and women.’ Let’s look at some of the benefits in more detail.

Benefits of Using a Low-Level Laser Cap

As mentioned earlier, LLLT works by extending the hair growth cycle and reducing shedding. This leads to improved hair thickness and density. With better blood flow and oxygen supply to the scalp, your hair will look and feel healthier. The procedure is non-invasive, safe and painless, which means there are no major side effects or noticeable discomfort. It works for both men and women. The caps can be worn at home so there’s no need for a visit to a clinic or salon. Equally important, the procedure is cheap in comparison with other treatments.

Disadvantages

There’s got to be a downside, right? Actually, no. Certainly, you’ll need to be patient, as LLLT is no overnight miracle cure. It usually takes a few months of consistent treatment to see significant improvements in hair growth, so if you’re not prepared to commit to a regime of several sessions a week for about 20-30 minutes per session, then this treatment may not work for you.

It’s also not a guaranteed solution for everyone. Factors like the cause of your hair loss, the stage of hair loss, and your individual response to the treatment can all impact how well the Laser Cap works for you. Mild side effects might include scalp irritation, itching, or redness, but few users report these. If they do occur, they are usually temporary and subside as your scalp gets used to the treatment.

Final Thoughts

Many people have tried LLLT and discovered it to be a game-changer in their hair growth journey. As with any treatment, however, it’s crucial to do your research. That shouldn’t end with a quick internet search. Consult with a hair specialist to find out whether a Laser Cap is the right option for you.
